Karen and I are big believers in continually improving ourselves as photographers and have committed to attending at least one new workshop each year. Over the years, the workshop that has had most impact on our careers has been The Foundation Workshop.

Karen and I are both alumnus of the workshop (Karen has taken it once, and I have taken it twice). This year, I had the honor of being the official photographer for the workshop (FW11 Session A Feb 2-7, 2013 in Glenrose, Texas). Many of my photographic heroes, such as American Photo Top 10 Anna Kuperberg, Ben Chrisman, and Sergio Photographer, have been in the role previously so I had enormously big shoes to fill.

In a nutshell, each student is given a photojournalism assignment and has two days to document his/her assignment. Each night after returning from assignment, the student’s work is critiqued. Through the guidance of a team leader and mentors, the student is challenged to tackle their weaknesses and is remolded into a stronger photographer.

Being the official workshop photographer was a tremendously challenging position as I had to visit the 25 students on his or her assignment, spending just a 15 or so minutes while telling each student’s story. Each day I spent 12+ hours driving and shooting. At night, I continued shooting during the student critiques back at the hotel where the workshop was hosted. I have not felt so exhausted physically and mentally in quite some time. However, I consider it a “workout” and feel inspirationally energized for the upcoming wedding season.

If you are a wedding photographer and want to drastically improve your work, there is no better workshop than Foundations. Visit http://www.fworkshop.com for more info.

Here are some of my favorite images that I took at the workshop. Thanks for reading!

Cory Ryan at Revolver Brewery. Ain’t gonna lie. I was kinda jealous of her assignment, being a craft beer enthusiast and all. 🙂

David Murray is an old school photojournalist and was one of my mentors in 2008. He has so many great stories, and I can just sit and listen to him for hours over some good French wine.
