fine dining at del mar

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

saturday night we had a fine filet mignon dinner at a private event. the event carried a swath of intriguing libations such as a tamarindo martini. ahhh the good life. so for sunday dinner we were thinking to ourselves: “how can we possibly top that? oh yah… of course! the fair!”

what better way to keep a good thing going then loading up on greezy food that can only be produced from the finest deep frying machines via our local county fair? (sidebar: our local county fair used to be called the “del mar fair” for the longest time, but we left SD for a few years and only to discover upon returning that some knuckleheads decided to change it to the “san diego county fair.” logical, yes. but hardly cool for nostalgic old farts like myself.).

anyway. this year’s culinary masterpiece was the Deep Fried Coca-Cola. i didn’t take these, but here are some pictures. it’s basically a funnel cake crumbled up in a cup with coca-cola syrup poured in, topped with whipped cream, and a cherry. not very creative, if you ask me. they didn’t incorporate anything new, just seems to be mixed up together with whatever they had handy in the stall kitchen. not a stroke of genius like the deep fried twinkie.

my initial impression on the taste wasn’t actually too bad. the coca-cola flavor was subtle and not overpowering. the whip cream made it ok. it was pretty much what i expected after hearing the description from the counter girl. all in all, i give it a C+ and only finished about half of it.

until next year… this is ed, “the gastronmic ninja,” signing off.

p.s. an oldie but goodie that i find appropriate around this time of year. kim deal, you still rock!

jb wagoner

delicioso! for tequila drinkers, jb wagoners makes a fine ultra premium silver. there’s a bit of controversy surrounding this brand as it is distilled and bottled in the US, so it can’t legally use the geographic indication “tequila.” nonetheless, it’s a fine drink and can be had for a cool sixty bucks at your local bevmo.

… and to boot: the bottle is a beauty. i’m a fan of great packaging and snapped some images. here’s a little fun doing a little lightpainting.
