Essential Photo Survival Gear: DQ Quikeys

Howdy fellow photogs!

Team Atrero spends a whollllleee lot o time in the “kitchen” cooking up some yummy images, most of that time is spent shining up them images really nice. But with the 100k+ images we shoot a year, although we love the process of making images, the volume of work can get a bit tedious. One of our most coveted tools here in the kitchen (aside from our 6qt gunmetal Kitchenaid Mixer) is our DQ Quikeys, a tool that has helped us shave off at least 50% off our post production time via the Quikeys Retouching Module.

Here’s a quick before and after:

Nothing overly dramatic used here. It’s mainly just a lot of the ol’ traditional dark room techniques. Your run of the mill actions don’t cut mustard for the most part because it adjusts everything globally. So in order to get the look we want in terms of tonality and contrast, we do lots of localized tweaking via dodging and burning. Since everything is well laid out on the Quikeys, the speed up is immense since you’re no longer hunting and pecking about the keyboard and mousing over to action and tools palettes constantly.

This took about one minute total time to retouch to add in all the dodging/burning and contrast adjustments and another 30 seconds masking out the tree on the grooms shoulder.

Beside the Retouching Module, there are 2 additinonal add on modules that you can use with Quikeys for the other two big chunks of post production:

Raw processing via the RAW Module.

Album design via the Freeform Album Design module.
